Your customers are changing how they buy. Before they call, before they Google, they ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini: "Who's the best WordPress agency for a small law firm?" or "What's a good managed WordPress service that handles security?" The AI answers. It names three to five businesses. If yours isn't among them, you never existed for that customer.

This is not hypothetical. AI assistants are now the first touchpoint for a growing share of purchase decisions, and the businesses that get named capture demand that never shows up in Google Analytics. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the discipline of making your website the kind of source AI systems understand, trust, and cite.

What GEO actually is

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of optimizing your website's content and technical structure so AI systems can discover it, comprehend it, and quote it in generated answers. Where SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links, GEO optimizes to be the source behind the answer.

The mechanics are different in three important ways:

Why this matters now

Research from Georgia Tech and Princeton on generative engine optimization found that GEO techniques can increase visibility in AI-generated responses by roughly 30–115%, depending on the technique and content type. Meanwhile Google's own AI Overviews are reshaping what "page one" even means — for many queries, the answer box is the destination now, not the ten blue links beneath it.

The window that matters: most businesses have done nothing about this yet. The GEO landscape today looks like SEO in 2005 — whoever builds the infrastructure first establishes the entity authority that later entrants have to fight for. For a WordPress site, that infrastructure is entirely within reach.

The five levers of GEO

1. Schema.org structured data (JSON-LD)

Structured data is machine-readable markup that tells AI systems exactly what your page is about: an Organization with a name and address, a Service with a description, an FAQPage with question-answer pairs, an Article with an author. WordPress emits none of this by default — plugins help, but they rarely cover the full entity graph a business needs. JSON-LD is the format AI systems parse most reliably.

2. AI crawler access

GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended are the crawlers behind AI answers. If your robots.txt blocks them — many do, often accidentally via a blanket User-agent: * / Disallow: / rule or a security plugin's defaults — you are invisible to AI search no matter how good your content is. Checking this takes two minutes; fixing it takes one.

3. llms.txt

An emerging standard: a plain-text file at /llms.txt that gives AI crawlers a curated map of your most important content — who you are, what you do, your key pages. Think of it as a sitemap written for language models. Early adopters report better AI comprehension of their site's purpose. We cover the format in depth in our companion piece, llms.txt Explained.

4. Content citability

AI systems cite passages that stand on their own. That means: one <h1> per page, descriptive subheadings, concrete specifics (numbers, names, dates), lists and tables where they fit, and enough crawlable text (400+ words on key pages). It also means server-rendered content — if your message only appears after JavaScript executes, crawlers may see an empty page.

5. E-E-A-T trust signals

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. AI models weigh signals of legitimacy when deciding who to recommend: real author attribution, entity links (sameAs) to your LinkedIn and industry profiles, visible contact information, HTTPS everywhere. Anonymous, unlinked, contact-free sites don't get recommended — they get ignored.

Where WordPress fits

WordPress powers about 43% of the web, and its plugin ecosystem covers parts of GEO — a schema plugin here, an SEO plugin there. But the pieces don't assemble themselves: schema plugins rarely emit a full entity graph, security plugins frequently block AI crawlers by default, and page builders often hide content behind JavaScript. GEO is a property of the whole site, not a feature you install.
